The Heartbreak Pill
Anjanette Delgado
Reviewed by Patricia Rice
In the interest of full disclosure — I enjoy intelligent chick lit in all its self-absorbed inanity. In THE HEARTBREAK PILL, Anjanette Delgado takes chick lit to new heights of intelligence as well as self-absorption. The author is an Emmy-award-winning screenwriter and television producer who has created a character far more goal-oriented than any chick lit protagonist I’ve ever had the delight to read.
Erika Luna is a research chemist and part of Miami’s Latin culture. As in most chick lit, she has man troubles — her husband of seven years has a mistress and wants a divorce. Unlike most other chick lit protagonists, Erika doesn’t drown her sorrow in chocolate and shoe shopping. She decides to do something practical about her anguish — as in find the brain chemical that will create an on-off switch for love.
In pursuit of happiness — or at least an escape from heartbreak — Erika finds a spiritual lawyer, a new apartment, independence, and a man who might even deserve her. She may also have discovered the secret to love.
A fast, delightful read jam-packed full of genuinely interesting people, soap-opera drama, and highly-creative insults, THE HEARTBREAK PILL could very well be a cure for what ails you.
