AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DINNERS
The Ultimate Culinary Adventure
Cheryl & Bill Jamison
Reviewed by Kate Douglas
It might seem a bit odd for an author of erotic romance to review a book on travel and food, but cooking will always be my first love, and this book by Cheryl and Bill Jamison is absolutely amazing. It’s funny and informative and fully entertaining....but it should come with a warning: do not read on a full stomach...or if you’re really hungry!
I knew I was going to enjoy it when I started thumbing through the first pages and found myself reading well into the night. The organization is perfect, beginning with details on planning a trip around the world with the ultimate goal of sampling local cuisine wherever the travelers stayed. From descriptions of working the “travel miles” system to what clothing to pack and how to protect items from theft, the Jamisons cover every aspect of their trip with humor and practical ideas.
From Hong Kong to Australia, Singapore to Thailand, India and beyond to South Africa, France and then to Brazil with myriad stops in between, the pair sample enough food to leave the reader hunting for a Rolaids while drooling over the amazing dishes at the same time. I was impressed with the descriptions of preparation and ingredients, the tale of each meal flavored with a sense of time and place that adds to their character. I could practically taste the curries and chilies, the fresh seafood and various soups and stews, main dishes and appetizers Bill and Cheryl sampled on their worldwide tour. I was also impressed with their willingness to try new dishes, though eating fried bamboo worms might be a bit over the top for me. (They taste like hollow French fries? Hookay...)
For the traveler, the connoisseur or the gourmand, for the ones who would love to travel but prefer the experiences from the comfort of home, I highly recommend this book. AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DINNERS will take you on a sensory journey unlike anything you’ve ever experienced, complete with some of the recipes for foods sampled along the way. Reading the book is definitely less “calorie intensive” than the actual trip. I would finish a chapter and actually feel stuffed!
Take a virtual journey of 50,000 miles through ten countries, sampling hundreds of wonderful dishes, many found only in their countries of origin. I guarantee you’ll finish this story with a new appreciation of the wonderful complexities and convivial qualities of food around the world.
