I love Charlaine Harris’s Southern Vampire series. She’s built a world that is detailed and fascinating, a blend of humor and violence that shouldn’t coexist so seamlessly, yet somehow does.
A Japanese invention of synthetic blood has allowed Vampires to go public. Sookie Stackhouse, a mind reading barmaid in the small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana, finds their quiet minds, which she cannot read, restful in a life that is under constant bombardment by the relentless noise of chaotic thoughts.
But the more she gets drawn into the affairs of the supernaturals (vamps, were people, shape shifters, fairies — you name it, sister, Harris has got 'em) the less restful Sookie’s life has become. In FROM DEAD TO WORSE, her weretiger boyfriend is missing and she has two witches and a guy named Bob, who is stuck in cat form from a spell gone awry, living with her. She’s drafted as a substitute bridesmaid, accidentally kills the man who was trying to kill her, gets caught in a territorial dispute, meets a supernatural great-grandfather she never knew she had and is betrayed by a loved one.
And that’s just Chapter One.
Okay, kidding. . .mostly. But this book is nonstop action. If that’s not enough for you, however, there are Harris’s characters. They never remain static — just when you think they are the wickedest or the true-bluest, she shakes things up to show you another facet you never saw coming.
Like the seven “Dead” books preceding it, FROM DEAD TO WORSE is a wild rollercoaster of a book. So climb in, strap down, and prepare for the ride of your life.
